about

This is one of the few tracks that literally interprets the theme of the last chapter in the novel. The chapter describes an eagle that was captured and had it's wings clipped. It used to fly around the suburb of South Melbourne but in the book the eagle is flying around Carlton where Lillie, the main protagonist in the novel, lives.

Featuring Stuart Vandergraff on Ney that beautiful Egyptian flute whose haunting melody emulates the sense of the eagle trapped in an urban environment.

lyrics

The Eagle Song
The days are longer now,
Now that you’ve finally gone.
I walk the streets all wet with the spring rain
And watch the eagle circle round this park again.
And he circles, oh how he circles
Trapped by the spring rain.

They say they brought him here,
Against his own free will.
I wonder why such a free spirit
Is flying around here still.
Yes he’s flying around here still.

A thousand miles away from here,
My mother rises in the morning.
She’s got a pair of binoculars
To watch those eagles circling.

She was the first one,
To teach me how to live.
She held my hand against the thunderstorm.
And she taught me how to give.
Yes she taught me how to live.
