about

Another track featuring Jim Conway on harmonica. Recording it was a real family affair with Tamlin and Janie the only others playing on the track. It was one of the first tracks recorded at Zen Studios and Jim was brought in just as they were laying the basic tracks. The song explores the reasons why people might take drugs, another theme that is explored in the novel as well.

lyrics

11. Stoned

I once watched you do it,
Even helped you get it in.
I think I’ll stick to boozing
Rather than begin.
‘Cause once you get the habit
It’s so hard to shake.
And when you get stoned
You know it makes my heart ache.
Because you’re so hard to reach
When you get stoned.

Well everyone was raging
And I was trying too.
When you passed out
I didn’t know what to do.
I kissed you on the lips
But they were stone cold.
My God I kept on thinking
I must be getting old.
Because you’re so far away
When you get stoned.

I once had a girl friend
Brown skin and eyes of blue
A graceful way of walking
Her strength came shining through
The other day I saw her,
Ruby lips and high heels
She said I need the money
You just don’t know how it feels
Because you’re so hard to reach
‘til I get stoned

Yes, you’re so far away,
‘til I get stoned.
So far away,
When you get stoned.
So hard to reach,
When you get stoned.
