about
In chapter 7 of the novel, Another Song About Love, Lillie, the main character, is working towards her first recording contract and wants to be number one on the charts. This is a real up tempo funky blues track, with a bridge that's meant to echo the old work songs sung by slaves on chain gangs. In a contemporary sense the lyrics could be about modern day consumerism and its impacts on our lives.
lyrics
7. Number One
Everybody wants to be
A number one.
Climb the top of the tree,
A number one.
Well you know it don’t matter
When you’re dead on gone.
Thrive on competition
Just to keep on keeping on now.
A number one, a special one
A number one, a special one.
Everybody wants to say,
Got to make it mine.
It’s such a crime.
Work hard every day,
Just to make it mine.
All of the time.
Well you know it don’t matter
When you’re dead on gone.
Thrive on competition
Just to keep on keeping on now.
A number one, a special one
A number one, a special one.
Got to keep on working.
Keep on working.
Everybody wants to be
A number one.
Climb the top of the tree,
A number one.
Well you know it don’t matter
When you’re dead on gone.
Thrive on competition
Just to keep on keeping on now.
A number one, a special one
A number one, a special one.
